K4: A Glimpse

Hot, sticky summer nights didn’t occur much in the nice hills of Colorado. The widowed Miss Newer was just getting used to the lonely house without her husband. All her kids moved away years ago so it was hard for her to manager such a large house on her own. With all the fans blowing, she drifted from the kitchen to the living room to sit back and relax. She started to drift off to sleep, so she decided to move herself into the bedroom. But first, she wanted to open up a few windows throughout the house to bring in some of the night time breeze. She zigzagged in and out of several bedrooms, bathrooms and hallways. Finally they were all opened so she went into the larger master bedroom at the end of the long hallway.  Despite the stickiness of the heat, she drifted into a deep sleep in what seemed like the snap of a finger. In the bedroom right next to hers, the one that used to belong to her youngest daughter Rose, the breeze was blowing the curtains right into the room. On the particular night, her dog got up to go into Rose’s bedroom and sleep in there. In the middle of the night, Miss Newer heard barking. It was unlike her dog to be barking like that, he was usually very quiet and calm. She walked into the room , which was quite a bit colder than hers. She walked up to the window to close it. When she turned around, she noticed a small white dove, just like the ones painted on the wall, sitting right on the dresser. At first, she was a little frightened, seeing as doves aren’t lively during the night. But then she caught a glimpse of its eye, just like eyes of her husband.
